The ancient and beautiful seaside city of Marseille, France, has attractions to suit many tastes. The city's enduring appeal is summed up in its architecture, which carries traces from over 2,000 years ago and masterpieces from contemporary architects.

When spending time in Marseille, visitors have their choice of museums to discover and explore. The city has been rebuilt many times over the centuries, which has created a trove of artifacts. International treasures are also on display in the city; the Vieille Charité museum contains the No. 2 collection of Egyptian antiquities in France, trailing only the Louvre. Other top attractions include the Porcelain Museum, Fine Arts Museum and Natural History Museum.

To see Marseille from a new perspective, travelers can climb Garde Hill and look out from the Notre-Dame de la Garde basilica, viewing the city and striking blue water. Other iconic buildings in the city include the Grand Théâtre, an opera house restored after a 1919 fire and originally opened in 1787. The Old Port is the hub of Marseilles and has served in this role for 2,600 years and counting.

Marseille's location on the edge of the Mediterranean has given it a unique culinary history. Restaurants in the city serve many seafood specialties made with fresh local fish. The most famous of these dishes is bouillabaisse, and local eateries will also serve up unique soups, stews and pasta dishes inspired and informed by neighboring countries' traditions.

Near Marseille, visitors will find Calanques National Park. The coastal area was dedicated in 2012, the first new park in a metropolitan area since 1979. Hiking through this space brings people face to face with over 100 protected species, and there are pristine spaces for rock climbing and surfing. The national park isn't just there to preserve flora and fauna; the area also contains longstanding fishing villages with a unique cultural heritage.

The Frioul archipelago consists of four islands that are part of Calanques National Park. With a unique climate and a host of protected native plant species, the island chain also hosts a harbor village and beaches. Situated on another island near the city, Chateau d'If is a historic fortress and prison, best known today as the setting of The Count of Monte-Cristo.
